How to Identify Employee Types and Offer Motivation

Updated: Aug 3, 2018

Steve Jobs – “Our approach is to think of companies not as businesses but as collections of people.”

Steve Jobs was a brilliant, innovative leader and businessman. Leadership of organizations coveted his Jedi-like ability of identifying what type of employee he had and how to motivate them. Keep reading to see the 3 types of employees in most organizations and how to communicate and keep them motivated.

1. Type 1: The Freeloader is the employee who only shows up to work for the paycheck. They are notorious for taking advantage of the company and offering nothing in return. An example would be the employee who takes 10 smoke breaks every day, surfs the internet, and constantly checks their personal social media accounts.

2. Type 2: The Worker is willing to work for their paycheck. They want to set a good example, honor their commitment and responsibilities. This employee wants recognition for doing their original job. Less likely to go the extra mile and take on more tasks. An example is the employee who arrives at 9am and leaves promptly at 5pm. They are never willing to stay and help.

3. Type 3: The Entrepreneur is constantly seeking knowledge and experience. This employee is willing to step into any role and help however they can. An example is the employee who can fill several positions within the organization or takes educational courses offered by the organization.

Now that we’ve identified employee types, let’s help your organization keep them motivated.

The freeloader is hard to motivate because they just don’t care about the organization. Many times, they are part of the problem instead of the solution. However, you can try offering them small weekly goals to meet.

The worker craves recognition and a purpose. Keep them motivated by giving them positive reinforcement and praise for a job-well done. Keep the lines of communication open with weekly updates by phone call, email or face-to-face meeting.

Empowerment and purpose are great motivators for the entrepreneur. This employee loves being a part of the solution. Keep giving them tasks that test their skills and keeps them involved in the decision-making process.

The one thing all leadership needs to remember when dealing with employees is to treat them with respect and clearly communicate goals and expectations.
