Steve Jobs – “A leader leads by example, whether he intends to or not.”
It’s a recurring nightmare many organizations experience. Bad leadership leads to high employee turnover or poor employee performance and engagement. A Gallup study indicates 1 out of 2 people have left a job to get away from their manager to improve their overall life. What can organizations do about bad leadership?
1. Provide training to all levels of management and leadership. Sometimes the only leadership training people receive is from guru books. Bringing your management and leadership teams together for training is a great opportunity to focus on effective and engaging leaders using positive ways.
2. Regular team meetings. Lack of communication is a huge stress for employees and organizational pitfalls. Having regular meetings provides an opportunity for mentorship, keeping all levels of leadership engaged and updated.
3. Hold management and leadership accountable. When an organization identifies bad leadership, proper steps need to be taken. If training and mentoring do not work, then a leadership change needs to occur. Employees need to know they are not expected to work in a hostile environment.
